RESEARCH · REFLECTIONS

My objective is to create a race track, one curved and one straight. Through this exercise, i have learned how to make race tracks by using a simple tool. Extrude tool is used during this exercise, hence, it made it easier and saved all the tedious work.

Washing board

My task is to create a washing board by using the tools that we've learned from MAYA.

BEFORE ASSIGNING NEW MATERIAL.

AFTER ASSIGNING NEW MATERIAL.

From this lab, i've learned to use the insert edge loop tool and also to understand bevelling better. Modelling this washing board is tedious as we have to keep making new polygon to combine each another to form a washing board. Besides, i managed to divide the faces of the object by using the insert edge loop tool. Bevelling are not only to allow the object to be rounded and more circular, however, it also can make the object have more faces to it.

E-Learning, multi tasking

Usually, i do my work with blasting music in my earpieces. This enables me to concentrate what i'm doing instead of listening to other sounds which distracts me a lot. However, i do not on the music when i'm writing reports or other stuff that requires decisions and tonnes of thinkings.

Learning 3D is indeed different from programming as 3D needs to learn how to see from different views and perspective. Besides, it requires more patience and time in doing it. Programming, we just need to understand the concepts used behind each questions. We need to know what are the solutions to the questions instead of just memorising codes plainly.

Learning is definitely not the same. For instance, learning 3D, we requires creativity and lot of practices while programming needs lot of thinking to understand what the questions wants and what are the solutions to the questions. I believe that i have not approach my learning in its best way, it can be improved by concentrating more in the lessons.

I believe that our lecturers should guide us slowly and makes sure we are listening to him/her. If we still do not understand, the lecturers should patiently tell us again. Besides, if we're lost in their lectures, they should bring us back onto the right track.

Blocks

These are the blocks that i've created while learning how to create bevels.

By using the blocks we've created above,
we can combine them and make it into a toy train as shown below.

RESEARCH·REFLECTIONS
Through this lab session i have learnt how to apply the bevel effects.

What is bevel effects?

The bevel image effect seek to add depth to an image. It got its name, because a bevelled shape on an image look like a real bevelled edge of a wooden, metallic, or plastic item.

EXAMPLE:

Bevelled effect applied on Circles

What is the difference between this 2 effects?

The circle on the left look more two-dimensioned before bevelling, while, the circle on the right look more three-dimensioned  after bevelling since they add depth to an image. After adding some depth to the image, the image will look more realistic, like a pop-up image while looking at it.

Cardboard box

THIS IS THE PICTURE OF MY CARDBOARD BOX.

RESEARCH ·REFLECTIONS

After a multiple of tries, i finally have this cardboard box successfully done. The first time i made this box the shape of the flaps are irregular. Hence, i consult the lecturer about the problems and i was told that all the vertexes are not supposed to be selected, we just needed two vertexes. As a result, the flaps are being rotated smoothly.

From this exercise, I've learnt to delete faces by selecting the faces and "delete" it or by extruding in. After removing the deleted faces, there will be a hole as shown above in the cardboard. Besides, creating deformers using non-linear waves wasn't easy. By applying this effect and having a bigger amplitude, it will create more wave deform in the object.

RESEARCH · REFLECTIONS

From this lab I've learnt to use the extrude tool to pull out the shapes you want from the object.

FOR EXAMPLE:

The above pictures shows that the sharp edges are pulled out by using the extrude tool.

FIRSTLY, WHAT IS EXTRUSION?

Extrusion, basically means "to thrust out", refers to both to the process in which material is forced through a die or series of dies in order to shape it as well as to the product of that operation. The shapes most often produced in this way include round objects like tubes, rods, and pipes, rectangular objects like solid and hollow bars, and plates.

PROCESS ON HOW I EXTRUDE OBJECTS.
HOW DO WE EXTRUDE?

1) Create a cube in any size, the cube must be in object mode

2) After creating the cube, we need to click on the inputs at the right and edit the subdivisions.
Remember to insert the subdivisions so as to allow the cube to be divided into a few parts.

WHAT DO I MEAN??
It means that for example if i insert 3 into "Subdivisions Width",
it will divide the big cube into 3 parts across it's width.

3) Change the "object mode" to "face" by clicking on the right mouse button.
Select the faces that you want to extrude. Hold on to "shift" while selecting multiple faces.

4) Click on "edit mesh" on the menu bar and click on "EXTRUDE".

AFTER EXTRUDING IT WILL BE LIKE THIS:

WHY DO I THINK EXTRUDING OBJECTS IS IMPORTANT?

The need to extrude the objects is important as it save all the tedious work by adding and creating another objects to combine it with the original one. By extruding, we can have the shape we want without having the need of adding another shape to it's original one. For example, my gear, i need the sharp edges at the side, hence i select the faces after inserting the subdivisions. As a result i have my gear with the sharp edges.

Primitive robot exercise

ORIGINAL.

MODIFIED.

I name my modified robot Booter, Booter has a shield that can protect himself from being hit or dents. Besides, Booter also has a gun which is his mean weapon to attack people when he is being attacked. It can be used in war as it can be operated easily and it can take commands easily.

RESEARCH · REFLECTIONS

From this lab, we started forming simple primitive shapes into a robot. The process of making this robot is quite tough and tedious as we need to make the shapes one by one and duplicating it to make similar shapes with the same measurements.

FOR EXAMPLE:
The legs of the robots

How can we duplicate the legs on the left to the right?

1) We need to create a cylinder and the spheres and have them joined together as shown above. We need to duplicate this 2 shapes in order to have the same shape and measurements of legs for the robot. Hence, select the shapes by clicking on left mouse button and drag over the shapes. The picture below shows that the shapes are selected together. Both of the shapes will move in the same way when you use the move tool to move it.

2) After selecting the 2 shapes, we can then press the button "CTRL + D" to duplicate. After pressing the button, the duplicated shapes are still in the same position, we then use the move tool to move the duplicated shapes out.

The after result of duplicated shapes. Thus, this concludes on what i've learnt from the lab session. Duplicating plays an important part in this session by reducing all those tedious work. Having to make the same shapes over and over again is really tiring, by duplicating it, makes the work easier.
